Pie Lab serves new life into communities through pie. Savory or sweet – pie is loved by all. As something that is loved by all, Pie is common ground and can be used as a tool for social change. Pie Lab brings joy, prosperity and social transformation through a channel of dynamic ideals that revolutionize the way business is done. At Pie Lab we are not interested in competing in the rat race. At Pie Lab we are interested in stimulating a new challenge: business that promotes a more nourishing future. Pie Lab is all about the interaction of a community with business where business responds to the needs of a community as they change. Pie Lab is real people with the goal to galvanize positive change in communities.
Pie Lab was birthed on Pi day, March 14, 2009 in Belfast Maine by a group of 14 young graphic designers, artists, writers and creative people from all over the country. The group of 14 was brought together by Project M.

On 3/14/2009 (π day) at 1:59 pm, a group of young graphic designers from all over the country, gathered in Belfast Maine and gave away free pie. We shared stories and laughter and united groups of all kinds, all while savoring slices from 35 different pies. Our message was unassuming and honest: Sometimes life is bad; free pie isn’t. The Free Pie Movement is founded on the idea that simple gestures, like giving away free pie, can unite communities and spread joy. Sweet or savory, fruit-filling or custard, graham crust or pastry, pie is a delicious provender enjoyed by all.

Angry residents in Milton Keynes blocked the driver of a Google Street View car when he started taking photographs of their homes.
Police were called to Broughton after residents staged the protest, accusing Google of invading their privacy and “facilitating crime”.
Councillor John Bint told the BBC the camera mounted on a car was intrusive and people should have been consulted.
Google said it observed UK law and only filmed from public areas.
The company also said it had consulted various police forces and provided the means for residents to have their home removed from the service.

ASDF will occupy Capricious Space as part of ‘IN REAL LIFE‘ During the 4 hour physical occupation an exhibition of 48 artists will concurrently exist online on this page (an exhibition exhibited in an exhibition). Each piece in our show will be available for view and download for a duration of exactly 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, the next piece will overwrite what had just been available. Each downloadable file will be sized to print so that you can materialize the exhibition yourself. At the end of the 4 hour residency all original files will be deleted. The downloaded files will be the only existing digital remnants of our exhibition.
Mylinh will be in Capricious Space uploading the files (while broadcasting her desktop live at IRL’s site). She will also be printing and physically installing the show in the gallery. David will chat with her live from Chicago, while downloading, printing and installing the show in Golden Age. You are encouraged to come and join either of them. Bring your laptops, paper and a printer will be available to use.
Design organizations and schools all over the world are increasingly pondering the proverbial question: Do designers have the ability to change the world? In the face of the current worldwide economic crisis, it may be hard to be optimistic. Yet given the right engine for change, the answer, according to Project M’s John Bielenberg, is a resounding YES—however, he would argue, it can only be done one community at a time. Through his intensive summer program, Bielenberg’s students use design, writing, photography and other strategic skills to address global issues at the local level. From the rural American South to urban Iceland, Project M applies design thinking to help provide safe drinking water (Buy a Meter, in Hale County, Alabama) or turn abandoned lots into parks (This Is Not Grass, in East Baltimore, Maryland). Recently, Bielenberg went to Reykjavík as the nation’s economy collapsed and led an M Blitz workshop, in which creative collaborators have just 48 hours to make a positive impact. As the recession continues here at home, we spoke to Bielenberg about his experience in Iceland and what Project M will do next to save the world.

One of the 48-hour M Blitz projects in response to the Icelandic financial collapse, Deilum involved posting items in bags for people to take as long as they returned it with something they no longer needed.

Google’s UK version of street view for Google Maps launched last week in the UK and has created a media circus ever since.
The Google Maps feature, which allows users to browse through popular cities with a set of high quality photos, has created controversy and huge media interest in the UK as many fear for the privacy implications of such a service. Google has begun pulling images that users have found inappropriate.
The Telegraph is reporting that Google has removed images of naked toddlers playing in a garden square in north London that were captured on the mapping system. Google claims users can use the “report a problem” section of Google maps to report concerns about images or have their own house removed. According to the company these reports will be dealt with promptly.
The service has created a media storm in the UK with major broadcasters like the BBC and Channel 4 focusing on the privacy concerns of many home owners. Google insists it has followed strict guidelines and consulted the UK’s authorities on any privacy concerns.
The company has removed several images but we have compiled some British classics below:

However, a chance encounter with a guy changes her plans and the night lights of the capital turn into the background to a tender love story. An extraordinary chemistry made of knowing glances and small gestures fills the few instants that separate them both from the sunrise.
