Carousel

January 11th, 2009

Nostalgia. It’s delicate, but potent… Teddy told me that in Greek, nostalgia literally means the pain from an old wound. It’s a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone. This device… isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, forwards. It takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the Wheel. It’s called the Carousel. It lets us travel the way a child travels. Around and around and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.

Each coffin represents a single person killed in the on-going Israel-Gaza conflict, which started on December 27, 2008. I will be updating this page daily with new numbers taken from BBC’s coverage on the conflict. For comments and suggestions please email me at moiz[at]moiz.ca

I am very sad to renew this project again for the current crises and I hope it ends very soon.

Japanese Slip ‘N Slide

A team of British and U.S. researchers has just announced that they’ve imaged the first high definition imprints of sounds that dolphins make in water. The scientists, associated with a project called Speak Dolphin, are constructing a library of these images and sounds so that, in future, they can verify that the same sound is always repeated for the same object. In short, they’re putting together a dolphin dictionary. (Credit for all images: Sonic Age Ltd. and SpeakDolphin)

The sound imaging is made possible through an instrument called the CymaScope. It, in turn, produces “CymaGlyphs,” or the reproducible patterns that are expected to form the basis of a lexicon of dolphin language, with each pattern said to represent a dolphin “picture word.”A CymaGlyph of a baby dolphin vocalization.

Certain sounds made by dolphins have long been suspected to represent language but the complexity of the sounds has made their analysis difficult. Previous techniques, using the spectrograph, display cetacean (dolphins, whales and porpoises) sounds only as graphs of frequency and amplitude. The CymaScope is said to capture actual sound vibrations imprinted in the dolphin’s natural environment-water, revealing the intricate visual details of dolphin sounds for the first time. The CymaGlyph patterns may even resemble what the creatures perceive from their own returning sound beams and from the sound beams of other dolphins.Mother and baby dolphin.

Researcher John Stuart Reid thinks the technique is comparable to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. ”Jean-Francois Champollion and Thomas Young used the Rosetta Stone to discover key elements of the primer that allowed the Egyptian language to be deciphered. The CymaGlyphs produced on the CymaScope can be likened to the hieroglyphs of the Rosetta Stone. Now that dolphin chirps, click-trains and whistles can be converted into CymaGlyphs, we have an important tool for deciphering their meaning.”Reid’s colleague, Jack Kassewitz of the Florida-based dolphin communication research project SpeakDolphin.com, added, “There is strong evidence that dolphins are able to ’see’ with sound, much like humans use ultrasound to see an unborn child in the mother’s womb. The CymaScope provides our first glimpse into what the dolphins might be ’seeing’ with their sounds.”The team has recognized that sound does not travel in waves, as is popularly believed, but in expanding holographic bubbles and beams. The holographic aspect stems from the physics theory that even a single molecule of air or water carries all the information that describes the qualities and intensity of a given sound. At frequencies audible to humans (20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz) the sound-bubble form dominates; above 20,000 Hertz the shape of sound becomes increasingly beam shaped, similar to a lighthouse beam in appearance.Reid further explained, “Whenever sound bubbles or beams interact with a membrane, the sound vibrations imprint onto its surface and form a CymaGlyph, a repeatable pattern of energy. The CymaScope employs the surface tension of water as a membrane because water reacts quickly and is able to reveal intricate architectures within the sound form. These fine details can be captured on camera.”

Regarding the possibility of speaking dolphin, Kassewitz said, “I believe that people around the world would love the opportunity to speak with a dolphin. And I feel certain that dolphins would love the chance to speak with us - if for no other reason than self-preservation. During my times in the water with dolphins, there have been several occasions when they seemed to be very determined to communicate with me. We are getting closer to making that possible.”

In case your whistling and chirping are rusty, dolphins are adept at sign language too.

Wieden launched an ad for Nike not too long ago for a non-profit cause, to help girls in villages by giving them opportunities called The Girl Effect. Today we have BBDO’s Starbucks’ non-profit ad looking quite familiar.

If you found Jade’s phone… Would you read her text messages, look at her video clips or listen to her voicemail? Jade is a young PR in Shanghai - follow her boyfriend troubles by getting total access to her phone.

they even have a facebook group: http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/Jade-Yu/33005136875

Basically, Jade’s life is spread across the different media, like youtube, facebook, microsite and only by going to each portal can you unravel the episodes. How does this help to promote the Nokia phone? Simple. If you think about it, the microsite features the story being unfolded in SMS texts and MMS videos, so it could sort of portray how a person’s lifestyle is like with a Nokia as seen through the phone itself in texts, camera phone pics and camera phone videos. Maybe they even made a flickr account for this.

As the sweep of Ogilvy took place today, Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of mother ship WPP, was in Athens with a select group of 250 staffers and other “smart people” to brainstorm about the future of the business.

Well, what are these high level thinkers doing? According to Business Week, there are jugglers to get people’s creative juices flowing. There games of Nintendo Wii manned by ad execs and others are listening to an executive from Britain’s Guardian newspaper give a presentation entitled “Oh My God, the Internet Ate My Business!”

Your mouth went try at the mention of jugglers and by now, you are probably gagging a little bit. Anyone in the trenches of the ad industry should be appalled and dismayed right now. Can you believe that the guys in charge are just now getting a lesson about the internet? CEOs of digital agencies? Don’t feel bad about that shit eating grin you’re sporting. That’s right. You’re going to be golden for a very long time. Clearly, the death star agencies are farther behind the curve then we all thought.

What’s Sorrell’s plan? ” Sorrell is now pushing for every one of his 133,000 employees—along with the 15 heavyweight members of his board—to embrace digital technology like there’s no tomorrow.”

Fucking christ. You fucking joker. As you spend, what a hundred thousand dollars taking some crap thinkers to Greece and god knows how much encouraging your staffers to embrace digital, the laid of employees of today are getting drunk at the local pub, cursing your name. Embrace digital! You should be ashamed! Come on. For how long has there been internal pressure at WPP do just that? How many staffers have left to join digital shops or head into the tech sector because you guys have been asleep at the wheel? Buying up digital agencies isn’t going to save you.

“WPP has set up digital training courses for 3,000 managers to find ways to engage customers with tools like Twitter and Facebook, among other new channels.”

You’re already too late on this on, papi. If you get myopic and just focus on digital, mobile and gaming are going to leave your ass in the lurch in just a few short years. Lets not even talk about real world issues like identity, expression, feminism and race in the US that are going to catch you out in the cold in the same amount of time. Lets not talk about the ever present need to do good that continues to face down your clients. Are you ready to confront all these issues as well?

In the article, the writer goes on to discuss how Marty wants more cooperation between his firms. Blah, blah, blah. Sorrell is basically admitting that WPP has become irrelevant. That they’ve done it to themselves and the solution? From what this article says, it’s no so solution at all.

“We don’t take anything for granted,” he says. “Fear of failure drives us quite heavily.”

Yeah, but not in the right direction, apparently. Instead of asking your staffers, who know the day to day problems, you get a juggler. Instead of looking forward, you’re playing serious catch up. Goddamn. This is so sad. So very sad.

10% Staff Cut at Ogilvy Group

January 6th, 2009

NEW YORK The Ogilvy Group today cut about 10 percent of its staff across multiple units in response to client spending reductions that exceed the WPP Group shop’s new business growth, sources said.

The cut affected the North American offices of units such as Ogilvy & Mather, OgilvyOne, Ogilvy Interactive and OgilvyAction, according to sources. Some sources estimated the number of layoffs at 300, but others said it was about half that, or roughly 10 percent of the total headcount at those offices.

An Ogilvy representative declined to comment.

Ogilvy is fucked. WPP is fucked. Advertising is fucked!
I’ve had lots of emails from people at Ogilvy who were layed off today. Most of the emails are sad… No, that’s a fucking understatement. Many of them are tragic. Some I know personally, most I know through email and telephone contact. Many are devastated, even though they are trying not to show it. But they know… As we all know, the business has gone over the edge of the precipice. It will be fucking years ’till the good times come back, if ever. Yes, the scumbags at the top of the totem pole… The ones who drew up the lists for the journey to the guillotine today, will survive. They always fucking do. The vast majority of the people laid off today had been with the agency for years… i.e. they are expensive. The future belongs to those prepared to on short term contracts for peanuts… Apart for the douchenozzles running the place and lyposuctioning out the big bucks! Fucking wankers!

Ogilvy bloodbath Tuesday… You heard it here first!
This from my Ogilvy spies today… Tuesday is the day the fucking hammer drops. I’m also told that it will be FUCKING BIG. We are not talking small numbers here … The mailroom guys have spent most of today (Monday) stocking up on empty shipping boxes for the poor fuckers who will be cleaning out their desks and on the street this time tomorrow. Then, believe it or not, there will be some sort of get together on Wednesday or Thursday for the lucky survivors and to meet and greet the new agency CEO, Miles Young! Boy, that will be a fucking jolly event. I can just imagine the pathetic pep speeches that will be delivered to the numbed audience.
