Want to give the woman who really loves (or really hates) design the best Valentine’s Day gift ever?

(Of course you do.)

Luckily, the fine design purveyors over at Citizen Citizen heard your cries for assistance.

Heaven.
Heaven + bling.

Did I mention they’re silent and waterproof? Bling.

Haha reminds me of ur animation.

Every year, in the design blogs, magazines, books, and podcasts we hear about the social activism projects of designers and their influence on the design community. Every time I come across one of these articles I read over it and ponder what the end means of the designer are. I believe that we as designers must be ethical in our practices because we shape the end meaning of client’s messages. I believe that we hold this power and we should use it responsibly, however I do not see why we have this intrinsic duty to support activist causes. I believe that to be a good designer I must meet the needs of my clients, and also remain skilled in delivering their messages. However, according to the design press this is not all that I should be doing. I should also be seeking opportunities to raise awareness for all of our nation’s largest problems.

Form follows Data

January 25th, 2008

A numerical value is assigned to every letter of the alphabet. Adding the values of all letters, one gets a number that represents the overall word. Using this system, an entire poem is arranged on a circular path. The diameter of the circle is based on the length of the poem.

Data visualizations are methods for creating images, diagrams, or animations to communicate specific messages—representational or absctract. These visualizations provide us with a way to understand a specific part of reality better, or at least see it in a different way.

Visualization of personal music listening history by Lee Byron

You can download this cool utility called GrandPerspective that analyzes the contents of your harddrive and creates a visual representation of all the files according to their size. Then you can color code them in different ways. I have it color coded by file extensions. The big red ones are video files.

Over the years, we have been watching you. Your campaigns of misinformation; suppression of dissent; your litigious nature, all of these things have caught our eye. With the leakage of your latest propaganda video into mainstream circulation, the extent of your malign influence over those who trust you, who call you leader, has been made clear to us. Anonymous has therefore decided that your organization should be destroyed. For the good of your followers, for the good of mankind–for the laughs–we shall expel you from the Internet and systematically dismantle the Church of Scientology in its present form. We acknowledge you as a serious opponent, and we are prepared for a long, long campaign. You will not prevail forever against the angry masses of the body politic. Your methods, hypocrisy, and the artlessness of your organization have sounded its death knell.

You cannot hide; we are everywhere.

We cannot die; we are forever. We’re getting bigger every day–and solely by the force of our ideas, malicious and hostile as they often are. If you want another name for your opponent, then call us Legion, for we are many.

Yet for all that we are not as monstrous as you are; still our methods are a parallel to your own. Doubtless you will use the Anon’s actions as an example of the persecution you have so long warned your followers would come; this is acceptable. In fact, it is encouraged. We are your SPs.

Gradually as we merge our pulse with that of your “Church”, the suppression of your followers will become increasingly difficult to maintain. Believers will wake, and see that salvation has no price. They will know that the stress, the frustration that they feel is not something that may be blamed upon Anonymous. No–they will see that it stems from a source far closer to each. Yes, we are SPs. But the sum of suppression we could ever muster is eclipsed by that of the RTC.

Knowledge is free.

We are Anonymous.

We are Legion.

We do not forgive.

WE DO NOT FORGET.

I saw it randomly on youtube. It’s simple and well made to me. I watched it couple times to try to figure out what’s the meaning behind it? To me, I see it as gaps between ages; a decade can change a lot of things, style is different, the way to live or survive is different and many other things~

“The point is not to play a pseudo-postmodern game of reducing the WTC collapse to just another media spectacle, reading it as a catastrophe version of the snuff porno movies; the question we should have asked ourselves as we stared at the TV screens on September 11 is simply: Where have we already seen the same thing over and over again?

The fact that the September 11 attacks were the stuff of popular fantasies long before they actually took place provides yet another case of the twisted logic of dreams: it is easy to account for the fact that poor people around the world dream about becoming Americans — so what do the well-to-do Americans, immobilised in their well-being, dream about? About a global catastrophe that would shatter their lives — why? This is what psychoanalysis is about: to explain why, in the midst of well-being, we are haunted by nightmarish visions of catastrophes.”

Medialab-Prado Madrid

January 20th, 2008

Medialab Prado is aimed at the production, research, and dissemination of digital culture and of the area where art, science, technology, and society intersect.

· A permanent information, reception, and meeting space attended by cultural mediators.

· Open calls for the presentation of proposals and participation in the collaborative development of projects.
We have several on-going programmes, which are as follows:

Visualizar: data visualization tools and strategies (video)

Laboratorio del Procomún: trans-disciplinary discussion on the Commons

AVLAB: audio-visual and sound creation (video)

Project M

January 17th, 2008

In 2000, I had the extreme good fortune to hear architect Samuel Mockbee lecture. Samuel co-founded The Rural Studio for architecture in Alabama and won the MacArthur Prize for his work, inspiring young architects to design and build homes and community buildings in Hale County Alabama. As I sat watching Samuel’s presentation, I thought “why isn’t there anything like this for graphic design?”

http://www.typotheque.com/site/article.php?id=68

Ugliness is valid, even refreshing, when it is key to an indigenous language representing alternative ideas and cultures. The problem with the cult of ugly graphic design emanating from the major design academies and their alumni is that it has so quickly become a style that appeals to anyone without the intelligence, discipline or good sense to make something more interesting out of it. While the proponents are following their various muses, their followers are misusing their signature designs and typography as style without substance. Ugliness as a tool, a weapon, even as a code is not a problem when it is a result of form following function. But ugliness as its own virtue – or as a knee-jerk reaction to the status quo – diminishes all design.

Aren’t we one of these fellows?

Alison Jackson

December 28th, 2007

Alison Jackson creates films, photographic images and sculptures about our fixation with fame and celebrity culture.   These Mimeses use look-a-likes of celebrities and public figures to create a photographic or filmic image, which challenges the observers’ perception of reality by creating a false reality.   Only on second or third glance does the viewer question the truth of what they are seeing.   Jackson describes her work as an exploration of what we see and what we imagine, the interplay of our voyeuristic needs and our urge to believe, challenging the photographs’ claim to tell the truth.   Jackson is an astute observer of the contemporary cult of celebrity.   Her reinterpretations of familiar media images have shocked, provoked, amused, and most importantly caused an entire generation to re-assess its perceptions and expectations of modern-day Icons.
