In 1948, Cage joined the faculty of Black Mountain College, where he regularly worked on collaborations with Merce Cunningham. Around this time, he visited the anechoic chamber at Harvard University. (An anechoic chamber is a room designed in such a way that the walls, ceiling and floor will absorb all sounds made in the room, rather than bouncing them back as echoes. They are also generally soundproofed.) Cage entered the chamber expecting to hear silence, but as he wrote later, he “heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation.” Cage had gone to a place where he expected there to be no sound, yet sound was nevertheless discernible. He stated “until I die there will be sounds. And they will continue following my death. One need not fear about the future of music.” The realization as he saw it of the impossibility of silence led to the “composition” of his most notorious piece, 4′33″.
amullins: So, I purchased a couple domains (failuretothink.com/org). I need ideas for content. A quick google search brings up an a$$load of articles on the iraq war. I was hoping for something a little more lighthearted…. I’d be open to collaboration on a project, as well (if you don’t want to give away your ideas).
AndyRoss:So, let me get this straight:you bought failuretothink.com without figuring out what you would do with it beforehand?
Sounds like you just wrote your first article.
excerpt from http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong:
“Hong Kong, or SARS Kong , so called as it used to be overrun by SARS, is a dystopian world in which George Orwell’s novel nineteen-eighty-four is the ultimate reality. Hong Kong is home to too many overly arrogant and pretentious expat workers who failed to find prom dates back home — this is the reason why many of them are married to Filipino domestic helpers, and why every kid now born in Hong Kong is Eurasian. Typically, members of this laughable migrant labour ‘force’, claim to hold traditional academic degrees in Mickey Mouse subjects from the prestigious University of Disneyland. They are usually seen roaming the streets with their jazzy haircuts, their ridiculous sense of self importance and belief that the local women are impressed by the unsightly ‘bulge’ in their trousers and on their heads.
Hong Kong is also home to the main inhabitants of the land, known as Hongkongers, Hongkies or Hongkongese, who are a special race of proletariats with no known national identity. They were used and despised by two political powers and is now nothing more than slaves and beasts of burden for the rich.”
aww..I always wanted to do this, but with only the card swiping beeps.

i thought of how art is compared to food, and the constant debate between formal and conceptual art. Perhaps formal art, art that is visually pleasing, could be related to tasty food. Conceptual art, art that is intellectually stimulating and informative, would be the equivalent of healthy food. So chefs or nutrionists might argue over creating tasty dishes as opposed to food that is good for our health. But is health necessarily more important than taste? Nutrionists might argue that the point of food is always about improving one’s health and that taste is not important. Chefs would probably disagree because the pleasure of taste is vital in their cooking. Probably in a food critique, it would go something like this:
Nutrionist: why did you put the onions?
Chef: coz it makes the dish taste better man.
Nutrionist: but it doesn’t add to the nutritional value!
Chef: taste is value!
What do you think? is taste or nutrition more important in food? Should one be compromised over the other?
Could they go hand in hand, like fruits? But then some people might argue that taste is subjective, and that nutrition is harder to debate about. But is it really? And does the subjectivity of something bring down the validity of it?
