Puma vs Adidas

May 20th, 2008

Adolf (”Adi”) Dassler started to produce his first sports shoes in his mother’s wash kitchen after his return from World War I. In 1924, his brother Rudolf Dassler joined the business which became Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory and did well – selling 200,000 pairs of shoes each year before World War II.

However the brothers did not get on well, and in 1948 they split up, with Rudi forming Puma, and Adi forming Adidas.

I painted the Adidas logo on my first ex-wife’s old –but honestly not noxiously malodorous– Puma shoes and took a sensual photograph:

Can you feel the connection?

Oh, that Murakami…

May 19th, 2008

Of the many happy campers at the record-demolishing (and economy-confounding) Sotheby’s auction last night, Takashi Murakami may have been the happiest. Drawing stares from art-world veterans — one told us she’d never seen an artist show up to watch his own work on the block — the Japanese Pop maestro sat in the back of the room with a serene smile as My Lonesome Cowboy, his larger-than-life sculpture of a boy waving an ejaculate lasso, brought in $15.2 million

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released today an interim final rule extending the period of Optional Practical Training (OPT) from 12 to 29 months for qualified F-1 non-immigrant students. The extension will be available to F-1 students with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics who are employed by businesses enrolled in the E-Verify program.
“This rule will enable businesses to attract and retain highly skilled foreign workers, giving U.S. companies a competitive advantage in the world economy,” said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. “By extending the training period by an additional 17 months to students who are employed by businesses enrolled in E-Verify, we are further ensuring a legal workforce in the U.S. and aiding good corporate citizens.

A digital filmmaker named Dennis Liu has made an amazing video for The Bird And The Bee’s lovely song “Again & Again”. The set? His Mac desktop. You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand; luckily, Dennis has dropped it on YouTube so that the world can see it in low-res glory.

Lucy and Bart

May 8th, 2008

LucyandBart is a collaboration between Lucy McRae and Bart Hess described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression. Unconsciously their work touches upon these themes, however it is not their intention to communicate this. They work in a primitive and limitless way creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement.

How I Spent My Stimulus

May 6th, 2008

Former WK12 Year 1′r Rudy Adler recently launched a new website – How I Spent My Stimulus.com. In January, Congress approved $152 billion in economic stimulus checks for millions of American households, intended to boost the economy and avert a recession. Just how this money will be spent remains to be seen. Rudy hopes this website helps shed some light on where the stimulus money is going.

Rudy created this as a collaborative project. All blog entries are submitted by visitors to the site. He’d love for you to contribute — just upload a photo and share your story.
