Miracle of $132.30

April 24th, 2009

I bought 8 items from supermarket and got a bill. If you read all the second word of each item name, from top to bottom, you will discover something extraordinary. (Answer translated in English: Whoever believes in him should… have eternal life. John 3:16)

comment: this guy’s work is so inspiring!

Mountains Trip

April 24th, 2009

地圖/Map: 川崎市宮前區 (1:10,000 / 2006-3 Edition)
時間/Period: 24-27/2/2007 (Unfinished)

I walked along all the folds of a map. The folds were folded or designed accidentally by an unknown person. It becomes my route to travel. I took photos for all the vertical objects (positioned at north), which are positioned at the folds of the map. In case there is no vertical object, I will stand in the north and become a vertical object.

Dress Code interview

April 20th, 2009

You talk about the disconnect between design school and the transition to
design professional — can you explain this disconnection? What does this
mean for new design graduates?

There are so many disconnects between being a student and professional designer. The main one being that once you enter the field, chances are that you’ll have to wear many different hats. You could be an animator, producer, storyboard artist, director and sound designer all in one project. This kind of multi-tasking is not taught at most schools. Also, most schools prepare students on how to make a nice portfolio and get a job. That’s fantastic but there is an entrepreneurial side to graphic design as well. In our classes we challenge students to act as authors and curators as well as designers. Instead of designing content we encourage them to produce it. That way when they graduate they can get a job at a design firm but also start a music
label, skate company or write a book on the transitioning to professional practice.

What can design schools do about this disconnect?
The most valuable class we had at CCA was thesis, taught by Michael Vanderbyl. In his class we had to create a project that had a life outside of the classroom. Produce and manage all the content as well as design it. The critiques were very grueling and students failed quite often. Thesis gave us such a solid
understanding of production and presentation that once we graduated we were ready to pitch our ideas to anyone. Being able to author, design and pitch ideas is the most valuable tool we can give students.

Ultra fine bamboo powder/charcoal cubes absorb moisture, odor, gas, ethylene, ammonia, formaldehyde, and more… apparently its made from water soluble powder so you’re supposed to keep it away from water. Every month it says to place it in direct sunlight for 6 hours to release all that it has trapped.

Youtube blocked in China

April 13th, 2009

Youtube appears to blocked in Mainland China by the evil Net Nanny.

Is it because of the 17th Communist Party Congress currently going on in Beijing?

The 17th Communist Party Congress is abbreviated to 十七大 (shiqi da) or ‘17 big’ in Chinese. Mainland Chinese soft porn website 17da.com and overseas-hosted hard porn link site 17big.com seem to be open for business.

Update: Marc van der Chijs points out the most likely explanation: Youtube just launched Chinese language versions of the website for Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Baker Tweet

April 12th, 2009

http://www.bakertweet.com/

BakerTweet is a way for busy bakers to tell the world that something hot and fresh has just come out of the oven. It’s as simple as turning the dial and hitting the button. All of the baker’s followers get a Twitter alert to tell them that it’s bun-time. Or bread time. Or whatever.

The first BakerTweet device has been installed at the Albion Cafe on Boundary Street in Shoreditch, London. To find out what’s cooking follow @albionsoven on Twitter.

BakerTweet allows businesses to use Twitter to communicate in real-time about offers, pricing and stock from a device that can withstand kitchen peril and is much simpler to operate than a laptop or a mobile.

It was made by Poke. We’re a digital creative agency based across the road from the Albion and, perhaps selfishly, we wanted a way to get the freshest baked stuff first. Then we realised it could be a great tool for bakers everywhere.

Google street view is not only helpful but it has produced many quality blunders that keep us coming back for more. In the latest edition of a Google street view bork up, a Google street view driver tried to drive under a low bridge, the bridge won.

In the images below you can clearly see the bridge that the driver tried to go under but in the following pictures you see that the attempt resulted in a bent camera rig as the following pictures are looking straight up.

Google must have a good sense of humor as it tends to leave these kinds of pictures live. They may do it for a good laugh but it also will generate a good amount of traffic to the site too. Either way they continue to provide a weekly laugh that we all need in these stressful economic times.

NEW YORK – The Fox network is making a reality show out of the troubled economy. An upcoming series titled, “Someone’s Gotta Go,” lets employees of a small business decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off.

Fox says it has no air date yet for the series, which is being developed by the company behind “Big Brother” and “Deal or No Deal.” Each week, a different company lays off an employee.

Fox also wouldn’t reveal the show’s host, which it says is a business consultant who will offer advice to participating companies.
