Fragmented Audience

June 17th, 2008

Many have argued that online video will satisfy the world’s advertisers in ways that traditional television never could. With online video, the pundits proclaim, channels are infinite, and you can choose whatever you like whenever you want it. That means advertisers know exactly what you’re interested in - and they can serve you the perfect ad.

But at the moment, this is little more than a pipe dream. So says YouTube.

Speaking at Supernova2008, a business-centric tech conference that kicked off this afternoon within shouting distance of San Francisco Bay, YouTube’s Jordan Hoffner pointed out that many of today’s advertisers aren’t all that interested in the so-called fragmented audience.

TIME AND PLACE

New York, NY 10012

Linked by Air is the graphic design partnership of Tamara Maletic and Dan Michaelson. They often focus on the production of public space, both physical and online. Design and technology are intertwined inventive processes in their work. Some of their recent projects include: the Yale School of Art website, a modular wiki that is managed by all members of the school; the AIGA’s “365” exhibition in New York, which could be rearranged by its visitors; and a website which grades the environmental performance of 149 countries according to 38 metrics, and enables visitors to explore the results through a set of interactive graphics. Dan and Tamara previously worked at the design firms Pentagram and 2×4, and at the Museum of Modern Art. Tamara teaches at the Parsons School of Design, and Dan is on the faculty at Yale University.

Join AIGA and Apple for the series, “Pro Sessions: Design Remixed,” and hear how professionals today are redefining their creative process. Featured speakers will share their insights into the changing landscape of design and discuss how design has evolved and creativity has diversified beyond any single discipline.

“Many new media artists choose to include interaction within their work for a number of reasons.
For one, the world itself is interactive and, by incorporating these qualities into a work, it
both mimics and considers how the everyday operates. Also, new media work tends to
question high art, such as painting and figurative sculpture. This questioning comes in
many forms. For example, new media often uses new technologies, therefore, asking: Are
there limitations to what medium art can exist as? Does art have to be tangible? Why
is art so prevalently commodified as objects?”

Road to Paris

May 31st, 2008

This documentary is about more than Lance Armstrong and his team preparing for the 2001 Tour de France. It’s a tutorial for those who don’t know anything about cycling. It’s an eye-opener for those who thought they knew how to train for a bike race. It’s a must see for anyone who has ever looked straight into the eyes of impossible obstacles and said, “Bring it.” This movie shows the heart every member of this team puts into each race, each training ride, and how everybody has a role, from Lance down to their team chef. It shows the sacrifices these cyclists make, the strenuous life constantly on the road. Join this team of amazing athletes as they endure cold rain, mud, daunting opponents, and radios that just don’t seem to work. And watch as Lance Armstrong trains for the rides that would come to define his amazing and heroic triumph in the Alps of France.

This was one of the self-initiated branded-content projects that W+K  did with the aid of Nike.
There are eleven parts on youtube, so look for them if you’d like to finish the whole documentary.
