Philippe Starck apparently apologizes for the waste his design career has caused.
Reportedly he says:

“I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact.Everything I designed was unnecessary. I will definitely give up in two years’ time. I want to do something else, but I don’t know what yet. I want to find a new way of expressing myself …design is a dreadful form of expression…. In future there will be no more designers. The designers of the future will be the personal coach, the gym trainer, the diet consultant.”

One Man Band

March 28th, 2008

Taking on the true tradition of “one-man band” with a classic repertoire, his corporeal ensemble includes drum-sensor footwear, a chest full of drum pads, shoulder tilt sensors, and my favorite: “Armband G-Force Sensors.” Top that off with a kilt and you have a legend.

Great website too!

EZ Screen

March 27th, 2008

Aside from being really expensive compared to just silkscreening something ourselves using Pratt’s stuff, this thing seems like it’s basically the same process without a frame.

If it works the way I think it does, this could have its uses when trying to silkscreen something that isn’t a flat surface, or just too curvy for a big screen since it isn’t held by a wooden frame. It says that once you expose the screen, you can reuse it again and again. It might even make sense to do this for small graphics like a company logo on a t-shirt or a mug or something. Or you can even silkscreen things on the go like “surprise tattoos” on people. Or very accurate but small stencil without having to cut bridges.

This only appeals to me because I’m lazy, and hopefully you all have better ideas.

Here is the website

By the way, I’m going to go ahead and get this because I can already think of a shit ton of things I want to try with it, so I’ll let you all know how it turns out.
-edit
I just placed my order.
I discovered that there are two products, Photo EZ, and Stencil EZ or something. You probably want Stencil EZ as the mesh sheets last up to 100 uses as opposed to Photo EZ’s 50. Also Photo EZ has to be stored in the refrigerator while Stencil EZ doesn’t apparently. It’s only $1 more expensive.

Brand Next

March 25th, 2008

In the spirit of Brand Next, the show invites guest not just to look, but to do something. In the Store for Tomorrow, you don’t pay to get; you give to get.

To make an exchange in the store, shoppers do not need to give money, instead they are required to commit to an action. Actions are based on things that people do to make the brand better. In the store, time, ideas, skills, effort and content are the currency. For example, Current TV needs more people to make films. In exchange for giving ideas and direction, shoppers get a filmmaker and camera hire to bring those ideas to life.
